The investigation estimates that the member statesof the European Union and the Schengen area haveconstructed almost 1000 km of walls on their borderssince the nineties, to prevent the entrance ofdisplaced people and migration into their territory

■ The practice of building walls has grown immensely,from 2 walls in the decade of the 1990s to 15in 2017. 2015 saw the largest increase, the numberof walls grew from 5 to 12.

■ 10 out of 28 member states (Spain, Greece, Hungary,Bulgaria, Austria, Slovenia, the UK, Latvia, Estoniaand Lithuania) have built walls on their borders toprevent immigration, all of them belonging to theSchengen area except for Bulgaria and the United Kingdom.
